7.3 Mechanical Processes | Press-Fit Technology

Press-fit technology is an electrical connection technology for printed circuit boards that does not involve any soldering. The press-fit pin is pressed into the metallized hole of a PCB. As the pin edges press/dig into the metallization of the hole, the electrical connection is established. There are 2 types of press-fit technology: solid and compliant.
In the case of the solid type, the pins of the component are solid and usually angular, with the connection being established via the corners of the pin in the metallized hole.
The tool diameter and copper plating thickness in the barrel are the crucial factors.

In the case of compliant press-fit technology, the pins of the component are pretensioned, flexible, or elastic. As a result of this design, they deform during the pressing process.
The final diameter and copper plating thickness in the barrel are the crucial factors.

The board specification should include the following details in relation to the press-fit technology:
  • Specification of basic hole and final diameter with tolerance
  • Specification of copper plating thickness in the barrel
  • Specification of surface finish
  • If possible, a manufacturer’s data sheet should be included in the set of documents

Standards

  • DIN EN 60352-5
  • IPC9797
